Repayment Assistance Plan Calculator
Estimate a possible monthly student loan payment under the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) using your income and dependents. Your servicer determines eligibility and your official payment.
Estimates are illustrative, not a loan payment offer. Your loan servicer determines eligibility and the final amount. Compare the current RAP rules at Federal Student Aid.
Explore an Income-Based Payment That Fits Your Budget
The Repayment Assistance Plan uses a percentage of adjusted gross income to estimate a monthly payment. The number of eligible dependents can reduce that amount further.
Use the estimate as a starting point, then confirm your loan eligibility and official payment with your federal student loan servicer.
What Is the Repayment Assistance Plan?
RAP is a federal income-driven student loan repayment option introduced in July 2026. It bases payments on adjusted gross income and qualifying dependents instead of using the same discretionary-income formula as older IDR plans.
For qualifying borrowers, RAP also provides interest and principal benefits. Your loan type and disbursement dates determine which repayment options are available.
What Can Affect Your RAP Estimate?
How Your RAP Payment Is Calculated
RAP generally uses a sliding scale of 1%–10% of annual adjusted gross income, divided by 12. The monthly amount is reduced by $50 for each qualifying dependent, with a minimum payment of $10.
1. Enter Your AGI
Start with the adjusted gross income used under applicable RAP rules. Married borrowers’ income treatment depends on tax filing status.
2. Count Dependents
Factor in eligible dependents claimed on your federal tax return. Each qualifying dependent may reduce the monthly amount by $50.
3. Review the Estimate
The formula has a $10 monthly floor. Your loan servicer will confirm the payment and whether your federal loans qualify.
Who May Qualify for RAP?
RAP is an option for qualifying federal Direct Loan borrowers. Parent PLUS loans and consolidation loans that repaid Parent PLUS loans are not eligible.
Check Your Federal Loan Type
Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized and eligible graduate PLUS loans generally qualify. Check consolidation history when applicable.
Review Your Repayment Choices
Borrowers with loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, have different plan choices than borrowers with older loans.
